How to use ASCII Art Generator

Turn words into ASCII banners with a FIGlet font or five pixel styles, or convert a picture into character art using text, block shading, braille dots or full color. Images are processed in your browser and are never uploaded.

    1. 1

Choose Text to ASCII or Image to ASCII at the top.

    2. 2

For text, type your words, pick a Font and set Letter spacing; optionally choose Wrap as code comment.

    3. 3

For an image, drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC or AVIF file, then adjust Width, Characters, Brightness, Contrast, Invert and Dithering.

    4. 4

Click Copy, or download the art as TXT or PNG, and as HTML when Colors (HTML) is on.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I type Chinese or other non-Latin text?

No. The fonts cover English letters, digits and common symbols only; any other character is drawn as a question mark.

Which setting gives the most detail for photos?

Braille dots packs 2×4 dots into each character for about 8× the detail. Detailed (70) uses 70 shades of ordinary characters. A larger Width (up to 300 characters) also adds detail.

Why does my picture look inverted?

Character art assumes dark characters on a light background. If you will show it light-on-dark, turn on Invert, and fine-tune Brightness and Contrast.

Can the ASCII art keep the original colors?

Yes. Turn on Colors (HTML) to keep each character’s color, then download it as HTML or PNG. Plain text and TXT downloads have no color.

What is Wrap as code comment for?

It adds //, #, /* */ or <!-- --> around each line so you can paste a banner straight into a source file header.
