    Frame rate

Drop-frame (DF) skips frame numbers 00 and 01 at the start of every minute except each tenth minute (00 to 03 at 59.94), so the timecode keeps pace with the wall clock. A “;” before the frames marks drop-frame.

    Tips

    • Bare digits are right-aligned: 1000 = 00:00:10:00, 1:00 = 1 second.
    • Start an entry with + − * / to pick the operation, then press Enter.
    • Multiplication and division round to the nearest whole frame.

    How to use Timecode Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply and divide SMPTE timecodes at frame rates from 23.976 to 60 fps, including 29.97 and 59.94 drop-frame. Convert between timecode, frames, seconds and 35 mm feet+frames, and re-time a timecode for a different frame rate.

    1. 1

Choose the Frame rate, for example 29.97 DF, 25 or 23.976.

    2. 2

Type a timecode and press Enter to Start, then pick + − × ÷ (or type it at the start of the entry) and add more lines.

    3. 3

Read the Total with its frame count, real time and 35 mm length, and use Copy tape to copy the whole calculation.

    4. 4

Click Send total to converter, or type directly into Timecode, Frames, Seconds or Feet + frames (35 mm).

    5. 5

Under Change frame rate, pick the Target frame rate and choose Keep real time or Keep frame count.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is drop-frame timecode?

At 29.97 DF, frame numbers 00 and 01 are skipped at the start of every minute except every tenth minute (00 to 03 at 59.94 DF), so the timecode keeps pace with the clock. A “;” before the frames marks drop-frame.

What if I type a frame number that doesn't exist in drop-frame?

The tool tells you the frame is skipped in drop-frame and suggests the nearest valid timecode.

Is there a shorthand for typing timecodes?

Yes. Bare digits are right-aligned, so 1000 means 00:00:10:00 and 1:00 means one second.

What happens when I multiply or divide?

The operand is a plain number, such as 2 or 0.5, and the result is rounded to the nearest whole frame.

Keep real time or keep frame count?

Keep real time lands on the same moment and rescales the frame count, for footage conformed at its true speed. Keep frame count keeps the same frames with new labels, so the duration changes, as in 24 → 23.976 pulldown.
